God didn’t create man to be a trophy on His cosmic shelf. He created man for fellowship. He wants to be intimately connected with you! That’s what God said to Moses in Exodus 25:8. “Let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.” And it wasn’t just an earthly tabernacle that He was requesting for that was only a symbol of where He really wanted to dwell. That’s what Paul said to the folks in Corinth. “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” 1 Cor 3:16 NKJ.
That is indeed the reason Jesus was to be Immanuel, God with us. Living Word becoming created flesh. Eternal God coming masked in temporal humanity. Born in barn, and laid in a feeding trough by working class parents. Announced by angles to lowly shepherds. Visited by gentile foreigners. Chased from His homeland by an envious king, and eventually killed by the religious leaders colluding with the government.
In spite of all that craziness, He stayed on. Through all the disrespect, through the pretense of civility while seeking His life, He stayed on, mingling in the midst of humanity. After all these years nothing has changed. Still disregarded, still waiting to be our Immanuel, God with us, God in the midst of our lives, our homes, our hearts.
